Mt Hood - Meadows Pre-opening

11/9/00

Met up with Matt in Hood River at 6am - back from his EPIC cross-Utah mountain biking trip. We're skinning by 7am at the Meadows area. DUMPING snow at arrival but it starts letting up just after we start skinning.
Skin track up one of Mt Hood Meadow's Trails

About 1/2 way up the snow stops and sun pokes out - skies turn bluebird and the summit of Hood totally comes into view.
Matt lays down the John Deere tractor skin-track w/ the Split Board. Skies are just clearing off.

We kick the pace up a couple of notches - ampin' with the great turn in the weather.
Motivated. The Wy'East face is the big pitch just below the summit.

We climb to just about level with the topmost lift-house at the area and take a break. Climb total about 2100 vertical feet. Skins gone - the first bunch of turns are instant grin-fests. Snow was fairly nice/deep where wind-loaded. Face shots in November! This snow was SUPER light for this area - temps remained very cold during the dump and snow levels very low - about 2500 feet.
Early November tracks.

I was tucked in behind Matt and had to back off and move my line about 20 feet to the right because he was just 'tatering me with his spindrift and roostertails!

So good.
The final 'signature' placed just before hitting the road.
