Tetons - Static Peak

The Tetons

On day 2 of our Teton escapade we got an early start and climbed Static Peak. It's described in Turiano's book as a good intro to the Teton backcountry. The views, the climbing, and the skiing didn't disappoint.

A zoom in on Static Peak (just R of center) and Buck Mountain.

A front had rolled in overnight and threatened rain all morning during the climb. The clouds unfortunately had kept a lid on the overnight radiational cooling so the June snow wasn't as firm as we would have liked. Outmaneuvering the jelly-rolls and sluffs that were kicked off on the descent kept things interesting!
The view from the top of Static Peak - valley floor and Snake River a vertical mile below. The vertical relief when skiing here was pretty breathtaking.

Making turns June 13, 1999. I'm the 'dot' skiing in the middle of the bowl.
