Sierra Club Outings were founded by John Muir in 1901. He believed that the best way to convince people to save valuable wild areas was to let them experience the awesome beauty of nature that needs defending.
The Rogue Group of the Sierra Club includes all of south-western Oregon, from the Coast, across the Siskiyou and Cascade mountains to Lake County. The Group is headquartered in Ashland, OR.
The Rogue Group currently has no officially sponsored outings scheduled.
If you are interested in becoming a trained trip leader please contact Maya Addington at [email protected] or Bob Palzer at [email protected].
When outings are scheduled, please contact the Outings Leader for start time and meeting place IF they are not listed in the schedule. Contact the hike leader before 9:00 P.M. prior to the day of the outing.
Be sure to check the schedule for sign-up times, cut-off times, and group size limits. Our list will sometimes include hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing, weather permitting.
Please check with one of the other organizations listed at the bottom of this page for more outings options.
This is a delightful 6-mile trail running along the south bank of the mighty Rogue River, all the way to Lobster Creek Bridge. Thanks to our former outings leader, Al Collinet, and many others, this trail is no longer just a dream - it is a reality! Download a PDF copy of the Rogue River Walk Brochure now!
It doesn't have to be the old 35-40 pound backpack anymore - take a look at some suggestions by experienced backpackers (below) - it's time to think about some newer gear and going light. You can be comfortable with a 20-25 pound pack with some easy adjustments, and it's not hard to get even lighter. There are lots of books and websites full of information about how to go light.
Download veteran leader Al Collinet's PDF checklist of "Suggested Personal Backpacking Gear."
Download a PDF checklist of backpacking gear and food for 2-3 days, weighing about 20 pounds. This list was provided and updated by RGSC member Ken Deveney after he attended a National Sierra Club "Going Light" backpacking outing in 2005 "ULTRA-LIGHT BACKPACKING GEAR."
If you would like to make a suggestion for a backpacking destination, please contact Maya Addington at [email protected] or Bob Palzer at [email protected].

The Soda Mountain Wilderness Council (SMWC) offers outings throughout the year in the Cascade-Siskiyou Monument Area. Click to view the SMWC Website or scroll down here for more SMWC outing information.
Disclaimer:
This information has been supplied to the Rogue Group by the Soda Mountain Wilderness Council (SMWC). SMWC is solely responsible for the content. These outings are posted here as a service to our members but are NOT Sierra Club-sponsored outings.
The Soda Mountain Wilderness Council (SMWC) invites you to join local naturalists on free public hikes on any or all of various weekend days through June 29 to explore wildlands in and near the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. In addition to learning a bit about local flora and fauna and visiting some nice country, you will also learn about and see first-hand conservation threats and/or opportunities in each area.
Important Details for Hikes:
BRING lunch (or dinner), snacks, water, rain gear, sun protection, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, (depending on hike difficulty), a sense of humor and adventure and embark on a leisurely walk or rigorous ramble in and/or near the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. Most trips involve at least a little off-trail, cross-country hiking. All hikes are free and usually involve carpooling.
Meeting Point:
All hikes will meet in the upper end of the unpaved parking lot next to Shop'N Kart in Ashland. There's a Taco Bell at the corner of Highway 66 (Ashland Street) and Tolman Creek Road in Ashland. Behind the Taco Bell is Bi-Mart. To the right of Bi-Mart is Shop'N Kart. Meet in the unpaved parking lot next to Shop'N Kart very close to the paved lot.
Group size:
Group sizes vary and are up to each hike leader. Space may be limited, depending on the hike. Expect to be gone into the late afternoon or early evening on most hikes that begin in the morning. Ask your hike leader for their best estimate of return time, which they cannot absolutely guarantee.
Hazards:
You may encounter ticks, rattlesnakes, and any other possible outdoor hazard (ill effects of sun, heat, rain, wind, cold, twisted ankle/knee, etc.) on any trip. We guarantee the ubiquitous presence of poison oak on the Jenny Creek Falls trip. You must sign a liability waiver at trip-start.
**PLEASE RESERVE YOUR PLACE WITH THE LISTED HIKE CONTACT PERSON**
*If you phone the contact person, please leave your email. If you email, please list your phone #.
*We reserve the right to deny participation due to safety concerns or for any other reason.
*Dogs by prior permission only at the discretion of each hike leader.
Even if or when strenuous, these outings are not intended to be "power hikes" that merely churn out the miles. Each trip includes at least one professional and experienced naturalist to help give you a sense along the way of why the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument's presidential proclamation calls the area an "ecological wonder" and "biological crossroads" and why the Monument needs to be expanded.
